"Scared Sitless" offers an antidote to "sitting disease," that surprising new affliction which results when we plop down on our derrieres for hours on end.

It may not actually be "the new smoking," as so many headlines claim, but the consequences of our sedentary ways are definitely catching up with us. Fortunately, the remedy is straightforward Develop better office fitness habits to sit less and move more.

This book sets out the science behind "sitting disease" and shows you how to fight it.

"Studies of the ills of prolonged sitting have mushroomed in the last three years. Yet office work that for most of us takes up a good part of the day has barely been touched. Larry tackles this vacuum in his book. He does this effectively, comprehensively, and with humor." - from the foreword to the book by former NASA Life Sciences Director Joan Vernikos and author of "Sitting Kills, Moving Heals."

It also helps you cope with the muscle aches and pains and other discomfort that can result from a poor ergonomics set-up and sub-optimal posture. Ergonomics is all too often an annual ritual visit from someone in HR, or a one-time intervention when you get a new desk. Taking charge of your own ergonomics situation can help keep you comfortable and productive every day, not just in the few days after you get your new keyboard. Likewise, cultivating a little more postural awareness at work can keep you from curling up into that pillbug posture that so often comes with desk work.

Naturally, exercise and movement are an important component of office fitness. The book shows you how to add more routine movement to your work day and how to do "no-sweat workouts" right at your desk, as well as home and gym workouts tailored to your unique needs as an office worker.

Ideally, you want your new office fitness behaviors to become automatic, so there's a whole chapter that shows you how to turn them into habits. Like all of the book, the habit chapter draws on the latest research and best practices to give you an evidence-based action plan for staying fit and healthy at work.

When my dad used to yell at me to "Get off your ass!", he was trying to tell me something. Sitting in front of a TV, and later sitting in front of a computer, was bad for my health. Larry Swanson puts my dad's advice into much more scientific and thoughtful terms, but the message is the same. Sitting all day is killing people, and the solution is relatively simple: Get up, move around, and you'll feel better. I highly recommend this book for people looking for straightforward ideas on improving health in today's office environment.

Scared Sitless The Office Fitness Book edition by Larry Swanson Joan Vernikos Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

This book is full of empirical evidence, practical tips and exercises. I found it easy to read. I have already learned a lot and would highly recommend it to anyone who has to sit a lot. I am a psychotherapist who has spent 30 years sitting with clients for 7 to 8 hours a day. I have struggled with chronic back pain and this book has given me a new perspective on how to prevent long term health issues.
~ Bonnie Bhatti PhD LICSW
Highly recommended for anyone who sits longer than two hours. Yes, that's most of us. I'm at my computers for hours, and I always feel tightness and pains in my shoulders and lower back.

Pain and office life might drive you to purchase this book for yourself (like me). Yet it’s very comprehensive in how to avoid problems with sitting and inactivity in the office. “Scared Sitless” will be a valuable resource for any HR department, office ergonomic consultant, therapists and exercise trainers.

From the Table of Contents you’ll quickly see how comprehensive it is, with footnotes to original research sources. Each chapter concludes with suggested reading for more depth.

I appreciate Chapter 2 about the science behind habits and behavior change…those insights can be applied to any habit changing in my life.

Individuals will find it valuable with clear how-to’s for sitting less in your own office. It’s become a daily encouragement for me be more productive and pain free, and I am.
Everything you might want to know about the effects of the modern office environment on the human body and steps one might take to survive. Bottom line Ya gots to move!
What an eye opening book. This work is meticulously researched with clear citations that show the validity of the authors premise. The underlying concept is sitting for the amount of time most folks do it in today's work and leisure environments is causing profound health problems. It motivated me to action. I know it will do the same for other.
I'll keep this book close at hand for reference in my home office; I'm even considering making signs out of some of the headings to post around in strategic spots. Larry's research is extremely thorough, and he speaks with authority as a longtime massage therapist. I've already taken some of his advice to heart by purchasing a standing desk, which has make a huge difference in my energy level. Thanks for an ultra useful book!
Simple read, with lots of interesting insight on the dangers of sitting for long periods. Somewhat dry but some humor is included. Situations and scenarios are well described and they help drive-home the messaging in the book. Larry introduces things the reader can do to improve their at-desk time without spending any money and with very little time investment. He introduces some consumer products but (thankfully) he stays away from 'pitching' them to the reader - he's fairly objective.

Full disclosure I know Larry through family. Prior to reading this book though, I had already set up my at-office cubicle as a standing desk before I knew he was penning this book. I don't mean to pat myself on the back, rather, I'm already bought-in to the subject matter and this should be known.

Never-the-less, the tips regarding how to orient a monitor, laptop, keyboard and mouse, often-used and rarely-used items to minimize over-reaching, were all useful and I employ them on my existing desk at work, and (sometimes) how I work at home.
This is a nice, level-headed discussion of the issues with sitting, with practical advice for people like me who spend way too much time sitting in front of the computer, and would like to avoid problems. You've probably heard most of this advice already, so there is quite a bit of emphasis on behavior change strategies to help you figure out how to get the advice to stick. This isn't a book to help you diagnose problems, or replace a visit to a practitioner... The list of exercises is useful, but quite short, and can also be found on the author's website, with videos. Finally, there's a good list of further reading after each chapter, worth checking out!
